Say no to Toro

Toro Energy is now a step closer to opening WA’s first uranium mine at Lake Way near Wiluna in WA’s far east, right at the gateway to our celebrated Canning Stock route. This mine proposal jeopardises a number of protected species, some of which are found nowhere else in the world, and opens the door for the nuclear industry to expand its presence in this fragile desert ecosystem.

Toro Energy, a small-time player in the resource industry with no experience in mining of any kind, wants to open WA’s first uranium mine near the Goldfields community of Wiluna. The open air mine will produce thousands of tonnes of radioactive waste that, according to the government’s own advice, will need to be isolated for 10,000 years. The highly concentrated and highly radioactive uranium that is extracted will be trucked thousands of kilometres on public roads through WA communities to Adelaide or Darwin for export.

Despite being waved through by the Environmental Protection Authority, which is supposed to act as WA’s environmental watchdog, Toro’s plan still needs the approval of the State and Federal Governments. Help us send a message to State Environment Minister Bill Marmion and Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke, letting them know that West Australians say no to the Wiluna uranium mine proposal at Lake Way and don’t want to give the nuclear industry the chance to weasel their way into our state.

Please help keep WA clean of uranium mining. Sign the Uranium Free Charter below and help us call on our State and Federal Environment Ministers to restore justice and stop the nuclear madness on our precious country.

Urgent International Appeal “Restart of Ohi Nuclear Power – A Threat to International Security” 31 May 2012

Tell Prime Minister Noda not to restart the reactors at Ohi!

Radioactive tuna has just been found in California, people from Fukushima are displaced and suffering

The world is still unsure of the fate of reactor 4 at Fukushima Daiichi Prefecture

If the reactors of Japan re-open it is putting the people, environment, and everything that survives off of it further at risk.

We do not need nuclear energy.

We must put an end to this toxic industry.

Sometimes equipment doesn’t operate as you would hope.

No Uranium Mine in Wiluna!

Yesterday Toro Energy made the announcement that they are moving ahead with the Wiluna Project, the first uranium mine in Western Australia.

Anti nuclear campaigner Mia Pepper went back to Wiluna where the Walk Away From Uranium Mining Towards Aboriginal Sovereignty started last August to interview Glen Cooke, a resident of Wiluna who opposes the mine.

Interview can be heard in the article

URGE PRESIDENT OBAMA TO ACT FORCEFULLY AND ACT NOW TO PREVENT A SECOND FUKUSHIMA DISASTER
May 10, 2012
Dear Friends,
The  situation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear site remains perilous. The  area has been hit with hundreds of earthquakes since the March 11 Great  Earthquake and Tsunami that led to the destruction of four reactors and  caused release of massive amounts of radiation. The cooling system for  all four damaged reactors is jerry-rigged, shaky, and prone to leaks.
